The short answer
A dehumidifier controls moisture in the air, but it does not repair a leak and does not remove the root cause of mould. Record where and when condensation or damp patches appear, then check for water ingress, thermal bridges, inadequate air exchange and temporary household loads. Equipment can be one part of the response only after that diagnosis. Observe repeated conditions, distinguish a local patch from moisture across the whole room, and treat repairs to water sources, the building fabric or ventilation as separate work. Repeat the same checks afterwards to see whether the original pattern has gone.
Build a pattern, not a single reading
One number on a hygrometer does not explain where moisture came from. Measure during normal room use and keep a short log of the time, weather, heating, airing, showers, cooking, wet cleaning and drying laundry. Position the sensor away from a window, heater, doorway draught, direct extract airflow and water mist, or it will describe only a local zone. Inspect the room at the same time: note whether glazing has misted, one corner is damp, or a patch beside a pipe, ceiling or floor has changed. Compare days with similar household routines rather than unrelated morning and evening readings. Also record when a surface dries after the event ends. A log does not replace a building diagnosis, but it reveals whether the symptom follows a particular event, weather pattern or location. That link determines the next branch of the investigation and avoids drawing a conclusion from the general feeling that a room is damp.
Separate condensation from a thermal bridge
Condensation forms where airborne moisture becomes droplets on a surface, so both the state of the air and the surface temperature matter. If water appears on glazing, a reveal, an external corner or behind furniture during cold periods, compare it with heating, air exchange and free air movement. Even misting after a shower is different from a narrow cold line that recurs independently of a short event. Such a line may point to a thermal bridge or an insulation detail, but a final conclusion requires the construction to be assessed. Do not conceal the area with finishes or place a dehumidifier directly beside it merely to create the impression of rapid change. Check whether heavy curtains or a cupboard block a radiator, ventilation opening or the gap beside an external wall. If the surface remains wet or the material changes, the enclosing construction needs investigation; simply extracting more moisture from the air does not answer why that location is cold.
Check for a leak or water ingress
A local patch that grows after rain, thawing snow, plumbing use or activity in an adjoining room follows a different pattern from condensation. Inspect accessible pipe joints, the area beneath an appliance, window junctions, the roof or the outside of a wall only as far as it is safe to do so. Mark the edge of the patch and the time it changes, and retain photographs for a contractor or building owner. Do not drill into or open the construction at random: hidden water may be close to wiring or may have affected a larger area. If an accessible isolation valve clearly serves the relevant equipment, use only the normal procedure; otherwise contact the appropriate professional. Dehumidification may help control airborne moisture during an organised repair, but it does not stop the supply of water. Even if the visible patch dries, repairing the route of ingress and assessing the material remain separate pieces of work.
Assess the intended air exchange
If moisture builds throughout the room, odours linger and readings return slowly to their normal pattern after household events, check air exchange. Start with the intended systems: is the extract running, are grilles and supply elements open, and can air transfer between rooms as designed? An extract fan needs a supply path; with a closed door and blocked openings, the sound of a fan alone does not demonstrate adequate exchange. Compare the room before and after cleaning an accessible grille or using the normal control, without interfering with a shared duct. An open window may change the reading temporarily, but the outcome depends on outdoor air and does not prove that the permanent system works. A dehumidifier and ventilation perform different jobs: the former removes some water from the air, while the latter also renews that air. The appliance must not be presented as a substitute for the building's intended ventilation.
Recognise a temporary moisture load
Showering, boiling water, wet cleaning and drying laundry create a peak with a recognisable start and a gradual end. Check whether readings rise after the event, which rooms are affected and how long surfaces remain wet. While cooking, cover pans, use a working extract for its intended purpose and avoid directing vapour into other rooms. After a shower, remove moisture through the intended system rather than allowing it to spread along the hallway. For laundry, account for the amount washed, drying frequency, doors between spaces and mechanical moisture removal where the equipment provides it. This does not mean an occupant is to blame for a building problem: a temporary load can combine with a thermal bridge, leak or inadequate air exchange. If the peak does not fall once the source has stopped, return to the other diagnostic branches rather than labelling it as purely household moisture.
Define the dehumidifier's role after diagnosis
A dehumidifier is appropriate when the task is defined as controlling excess airborne moisture and the source is known, has stopped or is being corrected in parallel. Before choosing one, define the room, operating routine, airflow path and water-removal method; use the separate selection guide for capacity. Once it is running, compare a consistent series of humidity readings, condensation observations and moisture-return times under similar routines rather than the amount in the tank on one occasion. Open doors can introduce fresh moist air from other zones, so the boundary of the controlled space matters. Moving the appliance beside a wet patch does not establish that patch's cause. If water still enters through a roof, pipe or wall, prolonged operation addresses only part of the consequence. Likewise, the appliance does not restore a ventilation duct or correct a thermal bridge. Judge its result as one part of the plan, not as evidence that a repair is complete.
Treat mould and damaged materials separately
Where mould is already visible or a material has softened, delaminated or retained a water mark, first stop the moisture input and establish the extent of the damage. Do not cover the area with paint, a panel or furniture before assessment; this hides change without explaining the substrate's condition. The suitable method of cleaning, drying, repairing or replacing depends on the material, affected area and access to concealed layers. A substantial, recurring or structurally complex case needs a person with the appropriate competence; do not inspect electrical parts or hidden services yourself. A dehumidifier does not remove the root cause of mould or dispose of damaged material, although it may support air-moisture control within an agreed process. Continue the log during normal use after the work, inspect the former area and check whether the original pattern returns. Recurrence indicates that the source or one of several combined causes needs to be assessed again.

Does condensation on a window mean there is a leak?
Not necessarily. Compare the droplets with surface temperature, air exchange and household vapour sources, but investigate a local patch after rain or beside a pipe as possible water ingress. Record when and where it appears, compare several similar scenarios, and do not extend a conclusion about glazing to a wall or ceiling without a separate inspection.
When can a dehumidifier be part of the response?
When excess airborne moisture needs controlling and its source has been identified or is being corrected. For a continuing load, air exchange and the room routine must also be considered. Define the working zone, sensor position and water-removal method in advance, then judge the outcome from a repeated pattern rather than one full tank.
Does a dehumidifier replace ventilation?
No. Dehumidification removes some moisture from the air, while the intended air exchange serves a separate building-system function and needs its own check. Do not block grilles or supply air to change a reading faster; if the normal system is not working, investigate that fault separately.
What should I do with an area where mould is already present?
Stop the moisture input first and assess the material's condition.
