Wholemeal bread
Fuller flavour with a soft crumb that does not feel overloaded.
Combine equal amounts of white and wholemeal flour from one table column and use the whole-wheat programme.
Wholemeal flour absorbs water differently, so the right programme matters more than trying to hurry the cycle. Some machines do not support a small wholemeal loaf; check your manual before choosing 500 g.

Load the pan
- Pour the water into the pan with the paddle fitted.
- Add the butter, salt and sugar.
- Mix the two flours and spread them over the liquid.
- Make a dry well and add the yeast.
- Choose a supported loaf size and the whole-wheat programme.
What happens next
- 1
Check the size
First confirm that your machine supports the chosen wholemeal loaf size.
- 2
Load
Liquid and additions go below, mixed flour forms the barrier and yeast stays on top.
- 3
Do not rush the rise
Use the dedicated whole-wheat cycle when the manufacturer provides one.
- 4
Cool
Move the loaf to a rack and slice only after the crumb has settled.
If something looks off
The loaf is too dense
Confirm the whole-wheat programme and avoid packing flour into the measuring vessel.
There is no 500 g option
Do not substitute a programme at random. Some models deliberately omit small wholemeal loaves, so choose a supported size.
The dough is crumbly
Recheck the chosen column and the water measurement; wholemeal flours vary noticeably.
After cooling
Cool completely, keep covered and freeze in slices if you will not eat it soon.
How to enjoy it
Try it with soft cheese, eggs or soup, or as a substantial breakfast toast.

Frequently asked questions
Why use two flours?
Equal amounts of white and wholemeal flour are specified by the official table behind this recipe.
Can I use only wholemeal flour?
That is a different formula. Use a manufacturer-tested recipe intended for fully wholemeal dough.
